Is the inner primary of a Harley Davidson leaking?

At first I thought my primary drain plug was leaking so I tightened it slightly but then realised that when I reached under the primary it was wet…not good! I cleaned the area around the primary and went for a short 10 mile ride. When I got back I realized it was definately coming fromt the inner primary somewhere under the drive belt area.

Remove all of the primary chain case cover bolts with a ratchet and Allen driver. Pull out on the cover to separate it from the inner chain case. Scrape the old gasket material off of the gasket surfaces with a gasket scraper. Wipe the inside of the cover clean with a shop rag.

Take your light and mirror and look up the back of the inner primary where the drive sprocket is located . When that seal leaks it leaves a trail of oil down the back out the front and drips near the drain plug as that’s the lowest point when the bike is on the side stand . Very common leak !

Click to expand… Click to expand… More likely the inner primary main shaft seal is leaking . Take your light and mirror and look up the back of the inner primary where the drive sprocket is located .
Do you need a new primary gasket on a Harley?
If so, it looks as though I will need a new primary gasket, the “tower” gasket, and of course fresh lubricant. Any help will be appreciated! Yes the primary has to come apart, the mid shift shaft goes through to the inner primary case and pivots in a bushing in the inner case.

All 3 primary gaskets are very thin. Clutch cover gasket leaked and had to be replaced with HD OEM to stop the leak. Actually only used 3 of the gaskets, not sure what all the other items are for, but I got them in the kit. Nice high quality gaskets.

You’ll probably see drip marks on it. When the seal goes oil will leak down the side of you tranny, blow onto your inner primary, accumulate near your primary drain plug & both drip & blow back onto you rear pulley. You might notice dirt streaks on you pulley from the oil that’s blown back having collected dirt. Don’t ask me how I know.

Failure of the primary chain case cover gasket or either of the two inspection cover gaskets will result in a leak and need to be replaced. Start the motorcycle and drive it until it is up to operating temperature.

Where does a leak from the main shaft go?
A leak from the main shaft will find its way to the drain plug area down the back of the inner primary. As others have mentioned, what appears to be a leaking primary drain plug is actually a leak from the backside of the primary case.
