No matter if it is a wet or a dry clutch all friction clutch plates are to be pre-soaked. We recommend pre-soaking all friction clutch plates in ATF “Automatic Transmission Fluid” Type “F”, For a time of 5 minutes, then turn friction plates up on edge and let drip dry.

Ideally, soaking them overnight is best but an hour is OK. You can even soak just a few minutes or at least brush oil over the top of the plates, pop them in and leave them in the bike overnight since the clutch case contains some engine oil.

Can I use brake cleaner on clutch?
You can use it on the sheaves but acetone also works. We used acetone on clutch sheaves when I used to pit for a guy in the old Mid America Ice Drag Racing circuit. He made the podium a few times so I believe it worked well. Yep acetone works but use gloves that won’t melt and keep it off your skin.
How to change clutch plates and springs in a car?
With the cover clear remove the gasket. If it doesn’t pull free cleanly use a proper gasket scraping tool to remove any stuck to the cover. A bit of brake cleaner may help too. Don’t scrape away with a screwdriver or anything pointed or you may damage the face of the cover where it seals.
What’s the best way to replace a clutch?
Tighten the bolts first with a cross-head screwdriver so you can push against the spring tension – new springs offer more resistance than old, worn ones – then torque them up in a diagonal order to the specified setting. Clean up the crankcase and fit the new gasket, then put the clutch cover back in place.
Is there still oil in the clutch cover?
Well, most of it. You may find some oil still left in the clutch cover when you remove it, but on many bikes the same is true even after draining the sump.
What causes the clutch to drag on a bike?
Examine the clutch basket. If the bike is reasonably high mileage or has had a hard life, check for cracks and look at the dark marks or indentations where the friction plates’ locating lugs hit the basket itself. In extreme cases these indents can cause the clutch to drag – the friction plates get caught in them as the clutch lever is pulled in.
