With the Simpson, you can see the voltage fluctuating. The Fluke can’t refresh that quick. #1 problem found: The Ignition key switch was bad. With the ATV being left out in the weather elements for basically 19 years, water/dirt got into the ignition key switch, caused undue resistance and the contacts inside severely pitted.

Why is my Kawasaki KLF 300 going downhill?
Going downhill with the weight of the carb and all else may be changing things one way or the other.This can lead you in circles looking for an intermittent problem. The rubber on these crack and even though you have a clamp on it, can suck air and drive you batty trying to find the problem.
Why is my choke not working on my KLF 300?
Your choke may be the problem. The ‘mixture’ screw needs a spring plus the tiny o ring. If its not there, or destroyed from attempting to clean the carb, it will not run, or will act exactly how you describe. Hope this helps. It was putting out in excess of 17 VDC. I replaced all of the light bulbs and replaced the voltage regulator/rectifier with a brand new one from Kawasaki ( Kawasaki part number 21066-1089) . Now, when you go to get electrical parts from the Kawasaki dealership, remember they get real, real proud of their prices for these parts.

I bought a Bayou 300 off a guy who said he was riding it it and it just died on him. I brought it home and fiddled with it. Seemed like the CDI 3- (yellow) wire connection from the stator was loose so I reseated it and it fired up.

Not sure what brand the new CDI is, I ordered it off Amazon but it doesnt say Caltrec on it. The new stator and pulse coil are Caltrec tho. I checked all grounds and they check good. Then I checked all other wires to see if they were shorted to grnd, but they all check good.

Had the same problem with 1998 300 4×4 and eventually led to bigger problems with ground being off. Cleaned carb, wasn’t the problem. Replaced Battery, and cleaned ground, wasn’t the problem. Now starter button won’t work, starter is fine checked with other power source direct. Some say wire to solenoid, but definitely a ground issue.

Check your voltage. It appears that on the KLF300s and other systems similar to them, that when the voltage regulator goes out and your voltage is unregulated and high (above 14.5 VDC) , it causes the Solid State Ignition to advance the timing and the knocking noise you are hearing is actually pre-detonation.

Locate the throttle control panel on the left of the engine directly behind the carburetor. Check the alignment holes at the front of the control panel, and the throttle arm directly behind it. They must be visually aligned. Move the throttle to the “choke” position, and then back off the “fast” position.

Why is my Kawasaki KLF 300 running lean?
Running lean means it needs more fuel to run correctly and visa versa. If you must use your choke to keep the motor running you have a lean condition. The choke provides more fuel and when you shut it off the motor is lean and running out of gas. You will need to remove the carb and all of the jets and clean it again.
