Can a car start with no fuel in the carburetor?
It acts like there is no fuel in the carburetor and needs to crank for several (4+) tries before it starts. Once it starts, it will start instantly anytime afterwards until it sits again. The engine is stock except for an HEI distributor (GM). The engine runs great once it’s started.

Maybe the carb does need cleaning AND there is a separate issue. And maybe you didn’t see the related conversation and is why you jumped to conclusions. Gas is making its way to the carb or else the plunger would have no affect. But yes gas is having a problem in-between the carb fuel inlet and somewhere before the plunger.

The gas evaporates from the carb, and you need to crank the engine long enough to get fuel from the gas tank which is about 15 feet away from the engine and below it. Filling 15 feet of fuel line, the fuel pump, and the carb isn’t going to happen in 2 seconds. 73LT, same here with my 73Z.
