What causes engine rpm to be high on startup?
Outside temps are 100F so engine is not really cold. First clean the IAC stepper motor plunjer and air canal and check again. If still high on idle, then its probably the TPS. Thanks, I’ve recently changed to a K & N cold air intake so maybe the dust and dirt got into the idle air control.
Why does my car rev up when I start the car?
Thank Kevin. Common causes of high RPM excursion at start-up are typically: large vacuum leak, throttle plate stuck open, cruise control stepper motor stuck in one position; faulty throttle position sensor, and/or faulty idle air control motor or solenoid.
When does the RPM go back to normal?
The RPM will usually go back to normal as you accelerate the vehicle, but will increase again after you stop. This is definitely not a normal situation. If you are experiencing a rough idle or your RPM is running high, then there are a variety of reasons for why this could be happening.
What to do if engine RPM is high on cold start up?
Fast idle on cold start up and takes 5-10 minutes to go back to normal. Outside temps are 100F so engine is not really cold. First clean the IAC stepper motor plunjer and air canal and check again. If still high on idle, then its probably the TPS. KYB Gas-a-Just shocks / Transgo reprogramming shiftkit.
When do I start my car the Revs go up?
Q: Engine revs way up when started, then behaves normally. If the car has recently been started, it doesn’t have this issue. When the engine is started for the first time each day, the engine revs way up, and the RPMs gradually go down to normal idle speed.
What should the engine RPM be when first started?
It is normal for the engine rpm to go up to about 1200 to 1400 rpm when first started and then comes down gradually. This is for emissions during cold start and considered normal.

Why are my RPMs running high when I start to shift?
On automatic transmissions, the shifting is often done by hydraulic pressure based on engine speed. If the system fails, it may require high engine speed to shift to the next gear or it may not shift to the next gear at all. Was this answer helpful?
