Is the tailgate unlocked on a Mitsubishi Pajero?

Now central locking UNLOCKs all five doors but LOCKs only the four main doors leaving the tailgate unlocked!! It is annoying having to go to the back of the car to manually lock the tailgate everytime I leave the car. The question is: is this a mechanical fault or is it an electrical fault? or is it something else?
