Why are my timing chains worn on my Holden Commodore?
Worn timing chains are quite common on the V6 engine in the Commodore. A change was made to the pitch of the chain, but the jury is out about the effectiveness of the change. In any case have the mechanic fit the updated chains when the makes the replacement.

Nor was it an issue with the SIDI VF Series 1 or current Series II. Holden replaced timing chains in affected VE cars when this came to notice.
Why did my timing chain need to be replaced?
Fault code light was on and dealer said it was timing chain/ tensioners needing replacement but light subsequently went out during transportation to Queensland. Bought sight unseen. I understand its quite a job, I’ll be using an external workshop to do the work. Parts from Repco okay?

When do you know to change the timing chain?

A timing belt typically needs to be replaced between 40,000 and 100,000 miles depending on the vehicle and it’s a few hundred dollar repair. A timing chain doesn’t need to be replaced unless there is a problem with it.
