Is it hard to shift into 1st gear?

My 1997 E36 M3 has recently developed an annoying/troubling problem. It’s sometimes difficult to shift into reverse, 1st or 2nd gear. This has been going on for a while but recently it’s gotten much worse.

Why do I have no reverse and first Gears?

This is symptomatic of a failing layshaft bearing (although I would try everything else first before tearing into the box). The largest bearing is at the end where reverse, first, and second gears are. When that bearing comes completely apart, you are left with no reverse, first, or second gear. DAMHIK. Good call CR!

Why is it hard to engage 1st gear and reverse gear?

One of two things is most likely happening: Your master cylinder is failing. You may have air between the clutch master and slave cylinders. First and reverse are the hardest gears to shift into on most manual transmissions.

Why is the reverse gear down instead of first?

“the reverse gear is down next to 4th instead of being next to first on my car, (1, 3, 5, 2, 4, R on the gear stick/knob), any ideas anyone?” Either you have the wrong gearstick, or the gearbox has been replaced at some point with the wrong one, which could easily be causing your problem.

Why does my first gear slip on my 85 supra?

The answer I’ve been told, because my ’85 Supra suffers from this, is that the synchro ring on first gear is worn. The ring is made of brass (a soft metal) to allow it to slip as the synchroniser brings it up to speed during a shift.
