Diagnosing Wheel Bearing noise can be difficult because the sound is so similar to cupped or knobby off-road tire tread patterns. Each results in a growling noise that increases with speed. There are several ways to tell the difference. A loose wheel bearing makes more noise while turning around a corner than a scalloped or cupped tire does.

Typically, the noise associated with a wheel bearing that’s gone bad is a grinding noise, and you would mostly hear this noise when you were trying to turn the vehicle in either direction. A humming noise could indicate a wheel bearing starting to wear down, which after the impact the wheel incurred, would most likely be the problem.

What should you do if your tire makes a growling noise?

Good wheel bearings allow the wheel to spin smoothly, but also keep the tire running true. Overinflate the tire associated with the noise a few pounds and see if the noise changes. If it does, move the tire to another position and test drive the vehicle to verify suspicions.

Why does my Wheel Make a growling noise?

If the growling noise were more noticeable in a specific gear range, a worn bearing in the transmission would generally cause the bearing noise.

A variety of noises can be produced by one of these components in different driving situations, from acceleration to deceleration to steady-state motoring.

Where does the growling sound come from in a transmission?

This usually applies to transmissions, not to transaxles. In a transmission, fourth gear is commonly direct drive. When you are in direct drive, the input and output shaft provide direct rotational flow. In this context, the growling sound may come from the output shaft pilot roller bearing.

Why does my transmission make a whining noise?

Frequently, a low, growling type noise may appear because of low transmission fluid level. The sound may turn into a whining sound when gears’ teeth wear accelerate because of a lack of proper lubrication, contamination or high mileage. Driving with low or contaminated transmission fluid, will cause all kinds of transmission trouble later on.
