Why does my car sputter after filling up at the gas station?
I hear that you’re not supposed to fill up if the tankards are there filling up the underground tanks because it stirs up the sand and what not, and that sediment ends up in your car. Maybe that happened? Water condensation droplets in the tank – they sink to the bottom & get picked up by the pump.
What happens when you fill up your gas tank?
On my car (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan) when I fill up my gas tank, almost immediately afterwards pulling out of the gas station my van sputters, misses, hesitates, call it what you will. The past couple of times the engine has actually stalled as well. This is very short term. After this quick event it is then fine for the rest if the tank of gas.
When does the car hesitate after filling the gas tank?
The hesitation lasts for probably only a half second, happening a couple of times with a few seconds between. So… pulling out of a gas station onto the highway, 10 seconds later the engine hesitates/sputters for .5 seconds, and then recovers. Then a couple of seconds later another half second hesitation happens.

Why does my car stall after filling the gas tank?
Letting it get VERY low then filling it will stir up the “crud” and allow it to temporarily clog things up until it settles back down. To confirm if this is whats happening, try filling up before the fuel level drops below half a tank. Do that a few times and see if it improves.
Why does my gas tank pop when I put water in it?
Water is one of the most common gasoline contaminants. When pumped into a gas tank, it sinks to the bottom and is immediately forced into the engine. Since water won’t combust, it causes the engine to pop and sputter. Fill the tank with high-octane gas and then add an octane booster.
What does it mean when your gas tank is full?
This may also take the form of a sputter. If your gas tank is full and your car still sputters when you hit the accelerator pedal, this could indicate water-contaminated fuel. The best way to remove all water from the gas tank is to drain and refill your gas tank.
