Is it hard to change a starter on a car?
Replacing a starter will vary in difficulty between cars. Some cars, generally those with longitudinally mounted(front to back) engines, the starter is extremely easy. Lift the car, starters right there, unplug it, undo two bolts and you’re out. Reverse to install new one.

Three workshops have quoted me €930-1100 for the job including the part cost which they state is €350. Buying a Bosch part online costs €124, so the incentive for trying this job is very high. Anybody managed to do it on the A150? A140, A160 and also A200 is apparently possible according to videos/comments on Youtube.

This car will not start if the battery is sub standard/defective going to the starter motor, this will at least confirm that power is reaching the cable feed to the starter motor, if no power is recorded on the meter then I would consider the starter cutout relay suspect.

the subframe does need to be lowered at the rear by removing 8x bolts and loosening 2x bolts at front. this can be done on a lift with a heavy duty transmission jack. it is still very fiddly, but avoids the endless complication of engine/transmission/subframe removal on these ageing cars. it usually takes me up to 2 hrs. The silver one. Yep.

One of the major problems with starter motor problems /failure on the ‘A’ Class is that the engine has to be dropped to get at the starter motor which is sandwiched between the under floor on the passenger side and the top of the engine.
What happens when I change the starter motor?
Once changing the motor, the car starts whenever it feels like it, sometimes if i switch the engine of immediately and retry to start it then it wont, and other times it will start. If i leave the car for a while and come back to it later, it will start.
