Why does my car not go into 5th gear?
Okay guys, so I’ve been driving around recently and for the past 3 days my car really dislikes trying to get into 5th gear =/ when i try going from 4th to 5th it seems like there is something blocking the way for the gearstick to get into gear = ( I’ve tried hopping gears e.g. 3rd to 5th but exactly same thing happens.
Can you access 5th gear and reverse on manual trans?
No because both 5th and reverse are on the same side, I also cannot access reverse. I have no problems with the other gears. I’ve read that it may be a couple of different things but not sure. any ideas? I recently had an almost identical problem on a VW; could not access 5th gear; went into 3rd instead.

The only explanation my friend gave was that he learnt in cars with 4 gears since childhood, and is not used to using the 5th unless he is in a highway and cruising. Thanks in advance for your responses. Well there is no harm known to me of using a fifth gear. I think your friend is suggesting this because he is not used to using 5th gear much.

Why wont my 5th gear slot into place?
Mine wont select 5th at the moment but thats mainly due to the rod linkage kunckle joint dissapearing down the road the other day, so i have a very flappy gear stick until this afternoon when i fit a new linkage. Hope this helps. Cheers man, will look into this tonight.

Cheers. +1 to amit. No harm in going to 5th gear when you touch 50. However it is a more matter of convenience if you drive at a speed centred around 50kmph: in this case upshifting to 5th just as you cross 50 and then downshifting as the speed drops below 50 can be quite cumbersome, especially if you have to do it often.

Clutch engages, shifter clicks up as normal… but bike stays in 3rd gear just revving high. Try again, no dice. 3rd time, hit the shifter REALLY hard and it goes into 4th. Ride a few miles in 4th, afraid to try 5th.

I thought that the transmission was not shifting to 5th gear. I got off the freeway and traveled smaller roads not going above 50-55 mph. Under these conditions the transmission seemed to shift normally. Is the car save to drive at speed under 50 mph without repairing the situation?

What to do if your transmission slips out of 5th gear?
Depending on how long your friend is planning on keeping this car and its overall condition, I would probably not fix this. You can just use 4th gear as your top gear. You will burn a little extra gas, but it will be much cheaper than a transmission rebuild. Thanks for all your thoughts.
