How do brake wear sensors work?
Electronic brake pad wear sensors replace the traditional metal squealer tabs found more commonly in braking systems. These tabs work by rubbing against the rotor once the pads have reached the end of their service life. A warning light will usually light up on the dash, indicating it’s time for a brake pad change.

Instead of using friction to create sound, they used a wire with an electrical current. When this wire came into contact with the brake rotor — after enough pad wear had put it in a position to do so — it would illuminate a light on the dashboard indicating it was time for a pad to be changed.
