How are the coils connected to the ignition switch?
This was assuming the vehicle wiring was connected for positive earth (positive battery cable grounded on the chassis). If you reverse battery polarity (going to negative earth), then these coils need to be connected with “CB” to the ignition switch and “SW” to the distributor points wire.
Where does the positive ground terminal go on an ignition coil?
For positive ground the “+” terminal goes to the distributor (to be grounded on the engine block). For negative ground the “-” terminal goes to the distributor (to be grounded on the engine block).
How can you tell the polarity of an ignition coil?
Hook up a voltmeter with the negative lead to the plug terminal and the positive lead to the block. Set the meter on the highest volt range. Crank the engine over (no need to start it), and you should see an upward swing of the voltmeter needle (don’t be concerned with taking a reading).
Is the ignition coil polarity sensitive on a MGA?
If you reverse cable connections on the battery the current flows in the opposite direction through the vehicle wiring. For most original functions on the MGA this matters not one whit to anything, as most original equipment in the MGA is not polarity sensitive (except maybe the optional radio).
How do you replace an ignition coil in a Mercedes?
They need to match with the letters on the engine. Remove spark plug wires from the old ignition coil and install on the new ignition coil. Firmly press the spark plug boot into the spark plugs. Connect the electrical connector. Tighten the bolt in the centre of the ignition coil to 8 Nm. Congratulations!
How many coils are there in a Mercedes?
You have three coils on the driver side and three coils on the passenger side on the six cylinder engines. In our case, we have an eight cylinder engine so you will see four coils on each side. Remove the spark plug wires. For this step, you will need the spark plug wire removal tool that we listed above under tools required.
What to do if your ignition coil breaks?
Unplug the electrical connector from the coil pack. Note: The clip that holds the connector tight on the ignition coil can break very easily. If yours does break use self locking cable ties to secure the electrical connector to the ignition coil. Note the position of the spark plug wires.
What happens if you touch the ignition coil?
Do not touch ignition coils or spark plug wires when the engine is running. Ignition coils generate very high voltage that can be hazardous and even cause death. Remove the engine cover.
