How to calculate milling of intake face on V8 head after mill?
This calculator will calculate the amount that needs to be milled on the intake face side of a V8 head. Some engines have a different angle for the intake side of the head. (intake side is not 90º to the head deck side) So it is not a straight one to one ratio. Some of the popular American heads are listed.
How are cylinder heads used in head milling?
In theory, forcing air and fuel in as small a combustion chamber as possible (measured in volume) will yield maximum engine compression and horsepower. There are a number of ways to accomplish the task. You can buy cylinder heads with small volume chambers already cast or CNC-machined in.
How does head milling affect timing and Octane?
As with any method of increasing compression, you will have to reduce total ignition timing and possibly use higher octane fuel with milled heads to prevent detonation. Proper tuning will tell you how much timing and octane your engine will need. Keep in mind, milling changes the relationship between the heads and/or block and the intake manifold.
Is the intake side of the head milled?
Some engines have a different angle for the intake side of the head. So it is not a straight one to one ratio. Some of the popular American heads are listed. The intake flange itself could be milled, but one would have to realize the intake would be useable for just that head.

What kind of heads are used in Eaton balancing?
Both sets of heads were initially run on the test engine in their ‘as delivered’ state of mill. The heads were then milled and re-ran with everything else on the engine remaining the same. The headers being used are the Engine Masters Challenge headers with 1.75” tubes stepping up to 1.875” before going into a 3” merge collector.
Do you mill the intake heads or the intake flanges?
If the block has been decked I mill the intake a like amount for all material removed in excess of .025″ from either the heads or the deck of the block. You can mill about .020″ from the intake flange of the heads rather than the intake. This allows the heads to move from engine to engine with out the manifold having to mate with them.
