Why does my Mercedes-Benz remote lock not Beep?

Sometime after the MY2005 facelift, MBZ changed the system to chirp by default, without the need for the “Netherlands” setting. It was phased in slowly, with the E-class first, then the CLK, and others.

It is not the radio, I have an aftermarket Pioneer deck that I completely took out and the beeping did not stop. I even cycled the top a few times and the top light is NOT lit or flashing.
