Is the alternator on my car new or old?

Is the alternator on my car new or old?

Battery is new and alternator tested good. I charged the battery this morning, went and put it in and it started right up. Two minutes later it died. I tried to restart it and nothing.

What causes a car battery to go dead while driving?

When your engine is running, the alternator charges the battery and supplies additional electric power for the vehicle’s electrical systems. It’s common to misunderstand that changing to a new battery will get the problem solved. A brand new battery will go dead quickly without proper charge from the alternator.

What are the most common causes of alternator problems?

Common cause as the serpentine belt is under constant tension. Not replacing it on time, stuck alternator pulley or a faulty bearing are common causes of this problem. Worst thing about this problems is that it can snap at a moments notice. Main causes of alternator problems (at least from what I’ve seen) are:

Why does my alternator not work when I jump start my car?

Improperly jump starting a car As with the car battery, switching jump cables can cause alternator problems. Namely, if you switch the plus and minus cables (from the “donor” car to yours) you can again damage the diode rectifier. Even worse, you can damage the “donor” car as well.

Why does my car battery keep dying even when the alternator is good?

There are a few reasons that your car battery could keep dying even if your alternator is good. The most common explanation is that you have a bad battery. It doesn’t matter how much juice your alternator is pumping into your battery if it can’t hold a charge. You also might have something that is drawing power after you shut off the engine.

How can I tell if my alternator is bad?

You can easily check by measuring the voltage at the battery with the car running, which should not go above 15 volts even with the engine revving. First, check that all the wires to the alternator and regulator are connected properly and not broken.

Where does the energy from the alternator go?

The alternator takes the energy from the crankshaft and turns it into the electricity that is stored in the battery of your car. When your car is running the alternator helps to power the different electrical systems in your car and keep your battery charged.

What should the resistance be for an alternator?

If all this checks out then I suspect you have a wiring issue. I would perform either a voltage drop or resistance measurement of each of the wires from the PCM to the alternator. Also, through the fusible link from the battery to the alternator. You should have less then a half ohm of resistance.

Why does the battery light stay on when the alternator is off?

The alternator is definitely charging the battery and does not drain overnight but the battery light continues to stay on. Before spending money to test the fusible links, please advise If the alternator will still charge the battery with a faulty or blown out fusible link? Thanks.

How can I tell if my alternator or battery is OK?

As with most electrical issues, if you know the battery or alternator is OK (because you had it tested), then diagnosis comes down to tracing and testing for continuity from one portion of the circuit (s) involved to the next.

What does the battery light on the alternator mean?

This is the same connector that lets the on-board computer know if the alternator is charging or not, which is what the battery light actually means. You can use a volt meter to test what the battery is receiving by connecting it to the middle of the posts while the engine is running.

Is there a problem with the alternator in Liberty?

Discussion in ‘ Liberty ‘ started by jonahb1987, Jul 10, 2019 . I recently had a breakdown. At first we thought it was the alternator, so I bought a new one. Had it installed at a mechanic and the same problem would happen. After being jumped, it would start but putter out in like 4 minutes.

What happens when you buy a new alternator?

The mechanic went out of their way and bought a different alternator from a different vendor; installed it and the same problem happened. It would start after a jump then putter out moments later.
