How does AC clutch work in hot weather?
In hot weather (>80 degrees), when I first turn on the AC it blows nice and cold for up to 30 minutes, after which it gradually gets warmer and then hot air comes out. If I leave the AC on when it is blowing hot air, it will suddenly blow cold again (sometimes it takes a couple minutes for it to work again, sometimes it takes 30minutes).
Why does my car overheat when the AC is on?
Two things, the air flow may be blocked and/or the engine fan may not be turning. You may be able to blow the debris out of the rad by blowing compressed air from the engine side. The fan clutch may be shot, or the temp sensor (that locks the fan clutch) may not be working correctly.
What should engine temperature be when AC is not engaged?
Engine temperature reading always in normal range <210 degrees. Heater is working normally. I’m pretty sure the clutch is getting the signals to engage. When the AC is working normally the engine revs slightly higher when AC clutch is engaged. Likewise, when the AC is blowing hot air and the clutch isn’t engaged the engine revs higher.
What happens when I Leave my AC on in hot weather?
If I leave the AC on when it is blowing hot air, it will suddenly blow cold again (sometimes it takes a couple minutes for it to work again, sometimes it takes 30minutes). Then the cycle repeats.
When does the AC clutch stop engaging in hot weather?
Then the cycle repeats. The AC seems to be dependent on outside temperature: on very hot days ~95 degrees the AC will only work for ~5 minutes before blowing hot, 80 degree days the AC works longer, limited testing in cooler weather (at night ~60 degrees) AC always blows cold. When it is blowing hot air, the clutch on the compressor hasn’t engaged.
What happens if you have a bad air conditioner clutch?
If the compressor clutch gets damaged, it will keep the air conditioning system permanently on or off. A faulty compressor clutch can be replaced but it is generally recommended to replace the whole compressor to save time and additional cost. How to Diagnose if the Car AC Compressor Has Failed?
When to know if your AC clutch switch is failing?
Lack of cooling If you begin to notice that the AC system is not blowing as cold as it used to, then that may be a sign that the switch has failed, or is beginning to fail. If the switch is not operating correctly, the AC system will not be pressurized correctly and will not work as efficiently in cooling the air.
What should I do if my Clutch cycling switch is bad?
It is also important to be aware that when replacing the clutch cycling switch, the AC system will need to be refilled with the proper amount of oil and refrigerant for the AC system. However, this is something that any professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, should be able to take care of for you both quickly and precisely.
