Why is the odometer not working on my Mercedes 300SE?

How often does a Mercedes Benz speedometer go on odometer?
Not on mine! I set it on Speedo, go to work and when I get back in to drive home it’s on Odometer. Up arrow and drive home. Next morning it may be on speedo – or not. Sometimes it stays there for a week at a time, sometimes it puts itself back on Odometer every single trip for four days.
