How can I tell if my 280SL is running?
The first thing to do is check your linkages. Make sure the linkage going down to the injection pump is completly relaxed at idle. It should just fall on to the top ball without moving the pump lever. If that’s good then I would suspect the automatic choke on top of the pump. That’s the device with the two water hoses going to it.
How can I tell if my 280SL choke is still on?
One way that you can check the choke is to loosen the two lower screws that mount the choke to the pump and let the choke lift away from the pump about 1/4 inch. If it leans out then you know your choke is still on either because it’s stuck or the wax thermostat is bad.
