What is the point of a secondary air injection?
Secondary air injection (commonly known as air injection) is a vehicle emissions control strategy introduced in 1966, wherein fresh air is injected into the exhaust stream to allow for a fuller secondary combustion of exhaust gases.
How does the secondary air injection system work?
The set-up in question is called the ‘secondary air injection’ system, which pumps air into the engine’s exhaust system when it is cold. The oxygen contained in this air allows the remaining fuel in the exhaust gases to combust, helping reduce emissions and warm up the catalytic converter. How does secondary air injection work?
How much does it cost to replace a secondary air system?
All cars are required to have secondary air injection systems, which make exhaust emissions cleaner and help to combust more harmful gases. If your secondary air system fails, then replacing it will cost you between $270-$390.
When to replace a secondary air injection pump?
If you’ve already experienced engine stalling, poor acceleration, and a check engine warning light, then you need to have the secondary air injection pump checked out immediately. If it is proven to be the problem, have it replaced by a certified mechanic.
What are the symptoms of a bad air injection pump?
One of the early symptoms of a bad secondary air injection pump is the Check Engine warning light turning on. The engine control unit can automatically detect when the secondary air injection pump has a problem.
Is there a problem with secondary air injection?
I have the dreaded secondary air injection system problem on my 2008 Tundra 4.7L. I am having trouble deciding whether to replace the parts or put the bypass kit on it.
When to use plug and play secondary air injection?
It essentially bypasses your AIP system so while it’s not technically “fixing” the problem, it’s keeping that system from turning on so it kind of is fixing it at the same time, if that makes sense. That system is basically only used at cold start up, and is for emissions only.

What is the part number for the secondary air injection system?
I not only found the part, I found the GM part number! The part is simply called “Cover” which is why it took me forever to find in diagrams, but its part number 12574378, and it costs $6.04. I am ordering one Thursday so I can pick it up at the dealership Saturday when I have the oil changed on my car.
