I pulled it back off and it instantly occured to me he had given me a group 24 when it should have been a group 24F with posts at opposite corners. So I had put the positive lead on the ground post,and then when I touched the ground lead to the other post on the battery (which was actually positive) the horn went off as a warning I assume.
