Why does my Mazda 2L shake at idle?

I have a 1997 626 Mazda 2L (manual) and it shook at idle and got progressively worse. It turned out to be the intake manifold seal. Its cheap to fix about $12 for a new gasket. To diagnose it is simple too, spray where the intake manifold joins the engine with a can of “jump start” or similar and if the idle picks up you have an air leak.

What to do when your Mazda I4 won’t start?

Check your fuel pressure too, might not be right. Spray carb cleaner around the intake manifold gasket & throttle body gasket while the vehicle is running. If it starts to rev, replace the gasket. Also spray it on all vacuum lines to see if that will cause the engine to rev, if it does, replace the lines.

What causes a car to die at idle speed?

Usually going up and down between 500 and 750, causing the car to shake violently. The fluctuations get worse the longer the car sits at idle speed, and eventually causes the car to die. If pulling up to a stop light that lasts for more than 30 seconds the car will die.

Why is the idle not working on my Mazda 626?

If the idle smooths out, you have an EGR valve control problem. If not, try tapping the EGR valve and see if it shuts. You can reach under the EGR valve and manually push the diaphragm up and down to see if it makes a difference. You may have to remove the EGR valve completely to check it.

What to look for in a Mazda 626?

Check the PCV hose and lines also. In addition, check the large air intake hose from the Air Flow Meter to the intake manifold for cracks and leaks. They often crack in the valleys and are hard to spot. Another good possibility is the EGR valve is stuck open or the EGR control is allowing vacuum to get to the EGR valve.
