Why does my car not start when I use the key switch?
It won’t actually start unless the key is on or if you have also jumped the Red to the Purple lead. If the engine cranks when you jump the Red to Yellow/Red lead; but it does not crank when you use the Key Switch, it means you have a bad Key Switch.
Why does my Car Crank when trying to start?
This only applies when there is a 2 terminal starter solenoid as the bypass wire comes directly off of the ignition switch in that application. The ignition switch fails to make a connection between the 12 volt battery terminal and the resistor bypass terminal on the ignition switch in the crank or start position.
What causes a MerCruiser key switch to go bad?
Key Switches go bad. It’s a moving part and water can get down into the switch. The Mercruiser Key Switch has three terminals on the back. One is a large Red wire which is the main positive feed. Another wire will be Purple which is “ignition”.
Why is there no voltage in my key switch?
If not, it means you are getting no voltage to the dash and/or key switch. This can be a blown ignition fuse, a popped circut breaker, a loose or bad harness plug, a bad ground or even a bad keyswitch. A good tip is to unplug, inspect and plug back in the main harness plug back at the engine.
Why does my Car Crank with no key?
When I re-connected the battery terminal, the engine tries to crank with no key in the ignition. Is there a relay or solenoid that froze in a closed position?
What to do if your starter is not cranking?
If so the relay is stuck. You might be able to jar it open by rapping on it with a screw drive. Otherwise replace it. If the starter does not try to crank, there is wiring problem from the battery through the ignition switch to the relay.
