Just reading your post Adam and thought I never noticed two buttons. So, out to the car, pressed the “usual” button and of course unlocked the tail gate. Then located the 2nd button, pressed it and heard the tail gate unlock THEN, could not open the tail gate. It had not locked into the full lock position.

You CAN’T remove the trim completely with the hatch closed, but removing all the retainers and clips lets you lay it down enough so you have easy access to the lever. Fiest thank you for that post, that was helpful. So I’m having a very similar problem with mine.

Scratch the contacts clean with what ever is handy and, gently, bend them down, or up, about 1/2mm. I did this because, as you may notice, the male terminals are a lot smaller than the female terminals (Oops.
