How big is the battery on a Mazda 3?
(Edit: Actually the hatch bulb is a festoon bulb, not a 194.) A 5W bulb draws about 5/12 = 420 mA. There are a ton of different makes of bulbs out there and configurations, but I don’t think any festoon compatible bulbs will draw more than 100-150 mA.

I’ll post on the personalization guide thread and ask if anybody knows what it does. To make matters worse, the Mazda 3 is a frustrating car to jump start. I have the pushbutton start, so sometimes, the battery can have enough charge to power up the electronics, but not enough to crank.

There are no lights under the hood, but is there a relay (as previously mentioned in the thread), so is there any relay that would be activated when the hood is popped? I also thinking of hooking up an ammeter up to the battery to see if there is any juice flowing when there shouldn’t be, but not sure if the keyless entry system draws any current.

How can I tell if my car battery is draining?
Can’t you use a cheap multimeter and check the voltage of the battery before it’s hooked up to the car. Then when you hook it up, check the voltage. If there’s a voltage drop then isn’t there something draining? I believe my battery stays at like 12.7V or something around there according to my scan tool.

Hey Prototype99, thanks for for the idea, not the issue though…I actually unplugged the harness completely from the head unit, and the drain continued. It did have a very very small parasitic drain on the battery, but by no means enough to drain the battery.

Dang it takes a lot to drain a battery. You’d think that if there was a short, that a wire is getting really hot somewhere. Either that, your battery is fine and just doesn’t charge via the alternator? Is that connection working and is the alternator ok?
