When did the rattle in the steering column start?
I first started noticing a subtle rattle in the steering column a few thousand miles back when riding over rough roads… and had it checked, but dealership couldnt even replicate the rattle. Since then, however (at 8,000 miles), it got substantially and continually worse, rattling almost constantly and over every little bump in the road.
What does it mean when your steering wheel rattles?
It sounds like a small BB rattling around in the steering wheel. It’s some piece in the steering column they’re goign to replace that “should” fix the problem.

So if you go under the dash, you will see where the steering column connects to there steering shaft there is a bearing right above it. This bearing has some play in it which causes the rattling noise on rough roads and bumps.

What to do about rattling column on GMC Truck?
If you have the updated green bearing, put a muffler clamp right above it and tighten. These two solutions get rid of the play in the column bearing and make everything nice and tight so there will be no more rattling. Its a cheap easy fix to make your truck much quieter since there will be no more rattling in the column.
