What does check the hybrid system mean?

I’ve had no problems ever with my 2006 400h until the other day when it was minus 6 and snowing in Newcastle upon Tyne and my “check hybrid system” and “check vsc” has been flashing on and off and is now constantly on.

I’ve seen this happen with the Prius too. Bosch do a replacement aux Battery for the 400h which has a slightly better capacity.
