Where is the thermostat between the radiator and engine block?
On my engine the thermostat is between the bottom hose of the radiator and the engine block. When the car has overheated and I check the hoses the top one is always very hot but the bottom one is always cold. the same applies to the radiator (which is new), its very hot at the top but cold at the bottom.
Where is the thermostat located on my car?
All cooling systems have a by-pass from cylinder head outlet to pump inlet. That allows coolant to circulate before the T-stat opens. You will see that the hot return from the by-pass is directed on the T-stat’s wax capsule at the back of the T-stat. This controls T-stat opening and the temperature of water coming out of the engine.
Why is the top hose hot and the bottom hose cold?
Any idea why the top hose would be very hot while the bottom one ( and also the bottom of the radiator is cold while the top of it is hot). Its a new radiator by the way. Where is the thermostat located on a car?
The thermostat housing is usually under the upper radiator hose. Unbolt the housing and remove the thermostat, using a screwdriver and pliers. Take the thermostat inside. There will generally be a number somewhere on the body, giving it’s opening temperature usually between 160 to 190°F or 70 to 90°C.
What happens if the thermostat is stuck in the closed position?
However, if the thermostat gets stuck in the closed position, the coolant can’t flow through the radiator and can make your engine overheat. To quickly tell if your thermostat is stuck, watch the flow of coolant through your radiator.

How can I get the thermostat out of my car?
The thick black hose runs from the side of your radiator and attaches to the top or side of your engine block with a tube clamp. Use a screwdriver to loosen the nut on the tube clamp and then pull the hose off of the engine. Set the end of the hose aside for now so you can access the thermostat housing on your engine.
What is the difference between upper and lower radiator hoses?
If you were to place them side by side, you’d find that they were different lengths and different shapes. They also do different jobs. The upper radiator hose is where the hot coolant enters the radiator from the engine. It cycles through the radiator, cooling as it goes.

Why is my lower radiator hose Cold instead of hot?
If you have a problem with your coolant temperature and realize that the lower radiator hose is cold instead of hot, you could be experiencing problems with the coolant system that needs to get fixed. You will need to look at the various parts that influence the radiator temperature to properly diagnose a lower radiator hose cold problem.

Where does the coolant go when it enters the radiator?
The upper radiator hose is where the hot coolant enters the radiator from the engine. It cycles through the radiator, cooling as it goes. When it reaches the bottom, it moves out of the radiator through the lower hose and back into the engine to start the cycle once more.
Is the radiator a metal or plastic part?
Your radiator is an essential part of your automobile. It does more than just hold the bulk of the car’s coolant, though. It’s actually responsible for removing excess heat from the coolant before it is sent back to the engine once more to start the process over again. Your radiator is made of both metal and plastic.
