What does it mean when your exhaust backfires?
A backfire is caused by a combustion or explosion that occurs when unburnt fuel in the exhaust system is ignited, even if there is no flame in the exhaust pipe itself. Sometimes a flame can be seen when a car backfires, but mostly you will only hear a loud popping noise, followed by loss of power and forward motion.
When does a car engine start and backfire?
Sometimes the backfire is a couple seconds after the engine quits turning. The engine was dead cold (never got it started) & it was like 35 degrees out. I will try & confirm tomorrow if I am getting spark while the starter is cranking.
Why does the exhaust on my motorcycle backfire?
Shorty exhaust also has a tendency to backfire more because there’s not as much pipe length for the turbulent air to become more smooth like the motorcycle was originally designed for. Engineers put a specific length of exhaust pipes on motorcycles because that way it will get the best fuel efficiency.
Can a car turn over without a backfire?
It will turn over no problem, but instead of starting it will backfire in the exhaust with a BANG. It will eventually start after a couple more bangs and once started runs great and idles fine.
Why does my car not start when the muffler is on?
IF you simply look at the carb, you can see the solenoid is nowhere near the float needle. Ok so its not a faulty carb flooding the engine. It seems more that the excess fuel is getting naturally aspirated into the cylinder but not combusting. Then exhausted to the muffler where it eventually does with a bang.

The last time I tried to start it, it backfired through the exhaust! With various carb issues in the past i have been able to get some kind of a different result by cupping the intake tube with my hand, while trying to start it.
