What does it mean when Battery says 12 volts?
Lately I have been having cranking issues. The battery is fully charged, but when I go to crank it, it cranks extremely slowly, then the steady clicking sound of a dead battery. Voltage drops significantly during cranking, but then reads 12 volts when the key is off.
Can a battery be cranked at 12.8 volts?
Yes, I have done the free power mod. voltage doesn’t tell you anything. only a load test will tell you if it’s any good. it doesn’t pass the test for the load your starter is putting on it. +1 what Eddie said. If you have a fully charged battery and it drops below 9V while cranking it is toast. 12.8V is not good for a fully charged battery either.

If so, you can measure its density with a hydrometer, a few $. Maybe the terminals need to be cleaned. Maybe a battery cable has broken. Maybe the alternator isn’t working and it isn’t getting a charge. Before you buy a new battery, take it in for a test. Even Walmart auto shops do this free.

Can a 12 V battery still be knackered?
Metered a battery can be 12 v and yet under load drops off significantly. The testers use a device with a resister in to make the battery work to measure the amps under load. As the guys above say, the proper battery test tool uses a BFO resistor to load the battery up and measure what amperage it can chuck out.

12.4v is a bit low for a good battery though – should really be 12.7v, so might be that one of the cells is on the way out which of course won’t help. What is the voltage as you trigger the starter? My battery was doing the same when I had a dodgy cell. Sure its not the starter or the wiring rather than the battery?
