When did the pulley bolt on my Kia Sorento break?
Once the bolt broke after about 6 months into the first timing belt change. I took it to the dealer and they were going to charge me $150 to see if it was broken, and then refund me the money when they fix it. It was 30 days from the recall cutoff.
Where is the harmonic balancer on a Kia Sorento?
The fact that the harmonic balancer almost sits flush on the end of the crank shaft with no woodruff key (just a roll pin) seems to be a bad design too (have not ever seen this done). This 2004 Sorrento now has 160K on it. Very strong engine, still has a drinking problem. I have had the crank shaft bolt break 2x and unscrew 2x.
When did I buy a Kia Sorento engine?
We bought a used 2004 Kia Sorento in july of 2010. 10 months later, we lost the power steering and alternator while driving and had to fix the crank pulley.

Why are timing belts always replaced on Kia?
For some reason KIA didn’t come out with a TSB about not reusing the crankshaft bolt. But those who replace the timing belts on these engine always install a new bolt because it’s a prevailing type torque bolt. A prevailing type torque fastener is one that when initially tightened will not loosen up.
How is the crankshaft pulley connected to the engine?
There is one mechanical system called a crankshaft pulley which helps distribute this engine power to other systems. The crankshaft pulley is connected to the crankshaft, which is a device that transforms the pistons’ linear motion into rotational motion.

What causes a crankshaft pulley bolt to break?
There are 2 problems here. Yes, the bolt needs replaced but the reason the bolt breaks is because the crankshaft gear has one single pin that shears off over time and causes the bolt to break. If you dont replace the gear or put a stronger pin in, which we did, you will end up with the same results.
Is there a recall on the Sorento 2005?
The Sorento in question (’05) did not qualify for the recall a few years back. Apparently, the recall went through early 2005, by my VIN# came back as not qualifying. Anyway, the issue that I am facing is that the crankshaft bolt is seized up.
What happens when the bolt comes out of the crankshaft?
When the bolt comes out, he’s going to need to repair the threads in the crankshaft so that a new bolt can be used. This takes a good mechanic, and not a hack like he sounds like he is. If this job gets screwed up, you will have to replace the entire crankshaft, which is why no one wants to tackle the job. BC. markley July 5, 2016, 11:46pm #4
What kind of lock washer does Kia Sorento use?
Put a star lock washer on it. Torqued to 130lb with lock tight RED. A year later it loosened and sheared the timing gear pin (this is much better then shearing off inside the crank shaft like before). Bought another harmonic balancer and crank timing gear.
