Why does my air con light flash 3 times?

The red air con light on my C Class W204 flashes 3 times then turns off. No cold air comes out of the vents. I thought it must have run out of gas but when it was checked (at Halfords) the mechanic said there was definitely gas in the system.

Upon return to WI (March 1) The AC light would flash 3X again. Turns out the 40 degree cutout (that I didn’t know about) prevents compressor from running (as I understand it, except when defrost is selected). I assumed loss of refrigerant, but upon removing patch a lot of gas blew out of low pressure tube.

Not a 100% sure about the ambient temp,but i remember just trying to turn it on during the winter when it was like 10* out or something and would do the same thing, blink a few times and not kick on. Dont see why it would happen when its above freezing though
