Where are the vacuum lines on a 1987 Jeep Wrangler?
I recently bought a 1987 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.2 liter 6. Comming from the transmission, there are four color coded hard plastic vacuum lines. They are coded red, green, yellow and blue. These vacuum lines pass under the battery, on the passenger side, and appear to go to the front axel shift motor.
What causes a vacuum motor to fail on a Jeep Wrangler?
The vacuum motor falls subject to failure for one of many reasons. Usually the shifting diaphragm will become frozen and seize, the vacuum lines will crack and vacuum action is lost, or the vacuum solenoid will fail. Sometimes you can flex too much and pull the vacuum lines off of the motor itself.
How big is the vacuum switch on a Jeep Wrangler?
There are four nipples on the switch where the vacuum hoses connect directly onto. The four vacuum hoses merge together into a 1 to 1 1/2 inch diameter connector that plugs directly onto the nipples. The vacuum switch will fit all 87-96 Jeep Wrangler YJ & Jeep Cherokee XJ models with Transfer case model number NP207 or NP231.

How does the vacuum work on a wrangler?
The vacuum is to the front axle disconnect mechanism. This shift mechanism splits the right side axle shaft power flow when the transfer case is in 2WD mode. Simply put, by splitting (disconnecting) power flow through the right front axle shaft, drag is reduced at the front axle and driveline.
Is the Jeep Wrangler front axle vacuum locker system working?
Like 4Jeepn said, it enables 4wd through vacuum. If it’s working you’ll be in 4wd which as you know is easy to determine. If you are, meaning it’s working, I would leave it alone. Just had to replace the vacuum actuator on my 89 the other day.
Where is the vacuum shift motor located on a wrangler?
The right side axle shaft is a two-piece design, split at the vacuum shift motor. So, you do need the front axle disconnect mechanism to work for 2WD and 4WD modes. There’s a shift fork and vacuum motor assembly mounted on the front axle (right side).
