Why do I need to replace lifters on my Jeep?

Why do I need to replace lifters on my Jeep?

When I did the cylinder head R&R on my 4.0L Jeep engine I replaced all the lifters because I was getting a noise that is often identified as lifter tick, but it didn’t go away with the new parts. The engine’s been running just fine for the last year, and I’ve had it suggested that it’s just regular high-miles Jeep valvetrain noise.

How much does it cost to replace a lifter?

Lifters cost like $5-$15 a piece. Plus gaskets. Which would be probably $20 all together for valve and head. Now I would understand if labor is included. If replacing lifters you are doing them all. Otherwise you chance missing the noisy one. And, have you priced gasket kits lately? The oil would have be extremely disgusting for that motor to tap.

Can you replace the lifter on a Jeep Cherokee?

The cylinder head MUST be removed. There is no way to cheat this, while yes, you can remove the camshaft without removing the head, by doing so, all the lifters will fall into the oil pan anyway which will now require head and oil pan removal. Pull the head, then remove the lifter. But replace ALL lifters while you’re in there…good luck.

What’s the worst that can happen if I replace lifters only?

However, if you are 20 miles from a road – on a trail – and a new lifter fails, getting your Jeep out will cost more than the parts you should have replaced. It’s all about the risk. Thanks for the replies guys. The reason I’m replacing lifters is that my engine is ticking badly and trying to figure it out.

Do you need to replace the camshaft when replacing lifters?

Mostly old school..! The camshaft does not necessarily need to be replaced when replacing lifters, and often times is not. In the case of a 4 cylinder, especially, I would replace lifters without doing the camshaft since you can replace the lifters without removing the head.

Can a hydraulic lifter get stuck in the engine?

A lifter stuck in the engine is not a bad lifter. They may get a little varnish on the outside but that has noting to do with it making noise. A hydraulic lifter has an internal piston and check valve the purpose is to remove all free play in the pushrod valve train using the oil pressure from the pump.
