Should I turn my AC on for heat?
The whole purpose of your HVAC system is to keep your home comfortable. While many homeowners think they need to stick to one setting or the other, this is not true. As long as you are careful in your setting changes and take good care of your system, you are fine to toggle between AC and heat settings.

Must be a spring issue because one day I said **** it and kept cranking it past the defrost setting clockwise as hard as I could over and over trying to force it and the spring behind the dial popped and corrected itself.
Can a car defrost when the heat is on?

I’m just taking a stab in the dark, but there may be a spring, or something loose inside the knob. Its a mechanical controlled door system. Something wrong with the actuator and/or door (s). You’d have to follow them from underneath to see which ones aren’t working.

How does a defroster work on an A / C heater?
The normal operation of the defroster is for the outside air is drawn into the a/c heater inlet with the system in the defrost position. When the system is in the defrost position the a/c compressor comes on and the air is drawn in and sent through the a/c evaporator to remove moisture from the air before it is sent through the heater core.
What happens if the a / C does not work?
Since the a/c does not work the air still follows the same path but now when the air goes through the a/c evaporator the moisture is not removed from the air and after the air goes through the heater core and hits the windshield as warm moist air.
Why is my defrost vent not working on my truck?
Also, there is no light coming on when the AC button and/or the recirculating buttons are pushed. All fuses look good. When the AC button is pushed, it doesn’t appear to engage the compressor. What could be happening? Can’t drive around without defrost. Too dangerous. Thanks!
Is the VAC line still connected to the heater?
In most cases the flap that directs your air flow, is controlled by vacuum lines, sometimes it’s a cable. You may want to check to see if the vac line is still connected. unfortunately you will probably have to tear the dash down some. 84fiero has a better handle on these issues.
