Are brake barrel adjusters necessary?
Brake and shifter barrel adjusters are necessary to fine tune caliper engagement and shift indexing. I do not recommend removing them as one day you will wish they were there. Backing a barrel adjuster all the way out will not strip the threads as there is no thread engagement therefore no damage to the threads.
How do you increase brake lever tension?
How to adjust your brake cables
- Pull the brake lever to judge how tight or loose your brakes are.
- Tighten or loosen the barrel adjuster accordingly.
- Loosen the bolt on the brake caliper to readjust.
- Pull or release the brake cable through the caliper.
- Tighten the caliper bolt back up.
- Check your brake pads.
Which way tightens a barrel adjuster?
Clockwise “tightens” the barrel adjuster, like a screw, so it threads INTO the shifter and shortens the cable path, loosening the cable. When you install new cables, make sure your barrel adjusters are fully tightened so you have maximum adjustment as your cables lengthen.
How do I know if my barrel adjuster is broken?
turn the barrel adjuster anti-clockwise if you don’t see it moving out as your turn it, something is broken. if it’s in more than one piece, it’s broken.
What should I do if my brake adjuster is not working?
If the barrel adjuster has a threaded lockring or locknut, unscrew this to enable the barrel to turn, then screw it flush to the lever or caliper to keep the barrel firmly in its new position. If a few turns of the barrel adjuster don’t solve the cable tension problem, try re-clamping the cable.
How can I increase the tension on my brakes?
For increasing the cable tension, you need to turn the barrel adjuster counterclockwise. Initially, go with a single full turn. After that, continue with half turns while periodically testing the brakes! If there is a threaded lockring present in your barrel adjuster or a lock nut, unscrew it before you start turning your barrel adjuster.
What should I do if my brake cable is too loose?
Loosening the barrel adjuster will actually slightly tighten the brake cable. After you loosen the barrel adjuster, pull the brake lever to see if it fixed the problem. If the brake cable is still too loose, you’ll need to adjust it on the caliper. Leave the barrel adjuster as it is.
Where is the tension adjustment on a caliper?
There is a recoil spring tension adjustment on the calipers near the mounting pivots on each side. Turning it clockwise increases the tension on the internal spring, allowing it to pull farther away from the rim.

Is there a Dorman brake cable adjuster I can use?
I had hoped the Dorman 03006 would help take up slack to tighten the cable. The Dorman brake cable adjuster folded up on first brake application. The item could not hold the cable tension. I gave it four stars only because I strengthened the sides, from other reviews that claimed the sides twisted.
