How long does a Jeep Commander engine last?
The Commander started with a number of stupid problems..software not quite right, sun roof drain tubes blocked etc etc. Once you are past that and you use quality oil of the required spec and you service them they will last for 300-400,00 kms. How old is the Jeep Commander in Australia?
Has now been at a Jeep dealer for 3 months and neither Jeep Australia nor Jeep USA can work out what the problem is. Dealer is now refunding our money. We traded a 1995 Cherokee on this. The Cherokee was 20 yrs old with 212k kms on it and had never let us down, hence I was happy to buy another Jeep, but never again.

Dealer diagnosed a problem as the transfer case shift motor. He said Jeep must be having a problem with them because replacements were on national back order (might take a month or more to get one). He said that I can keep driving it without any harm, and it shifts in and out of 4 wheel low just fine.

It started right after the last time it was reprogrammed. Mine was acting up pretty bad for awhile. I kept trying to reset the computer.
Can you engage and disengage service 4WD system?
It is possible to engage and disengage while stationary, although this is usually a little bit louder and you may have to attempt it a couple of times before it takes. If it threw the Service 4WD message, I would take it to be scanned and see if that provides any insight into why you couldn’t disengage.
