Why is my transfer case lever not connected?
BadDriver4x4…Could be as simple as a cable coming loose at the transfer case lever. Could be more but sounds basic. No clunks, rattles or other symptoms, it should be linkage related. I have parts diagrams if you need a clear picture of how the shift system works. Make sure you trust the shop.
Do you break transfer case when forcing shift?
So you do not break transfer case when forcing the shift. Most times the engine heat breaks down the plastic bushing and breaks at the most inconvenient time. You hope it’s upper bushing the lower bushing is close to exhaust so it’s a hot tight work area.

Back in November of 2011, while I was in the process of changing my oil, I discovered the shift linkage between the lever and my transfer case on my 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4 had fallen off. Upon looking into it, I found the dealership fix would be $40 for parts and I can install them myself.

There is an updated linkage available at the dealer. I have pursued that avenue as well, and they don’t have anything. Its hard to believe that a wear item on the truck cant be replaced and that when the plastic ends wear out, your left with climbing under the truck.
How do you hook up a transfer case?
Just adjust it as needed. I put everything together before crawling under my truck. Then it was a simple matter of unscrewing the lock nut and then pulling washers off, threading the bolt & spacer through the hole in the transfer case connection, then putting the washers back on the bolt and hand tightening the lock nut.
