How does the smart key work on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?
The Smart Key Imobalizer works by electronically cutting out both the fuel pump and ceasing spark plug firing. I also tried starting the engine with a spare key that does not have the Smart Key chip, the engine started and the SKIS indicator lamp (the orange light with the key and the line going through it) came on.
Why is My Jeep Grand Cherokee not recognizing my key?
It is the ignition switch. It is not recognizing your key correctly. The car basically thinks it is being stolen and shuts down. The dealer changed my ignition switch in Nov. of ’06 and I have not had the same problem since. Fortunately for myself the Jeep was still under warranty. I can’t imagine this is cheap.

Started misfiring with one code coming up P0351, which is cylinder#1 secondary ignition fault code. I replaced the complete coil pack and same code came up , then several other codes would come up all in relation to cylinder misfires. DO NOT replace you ignition coil pack with Autozone.
