Are there alternatives to the dual plug ignition system?
Over the last decade, there have been many alternatives offered to the BMW owner to overcome the octane problem. Some of these solutions are; compression reduction, octane boosters and fuel additives, fuel mixing, and, most recently, the Dual Plug Ignition System. Each of these alternatives is discussed below. – 6 –
What kind of spark plugs do I Need?
It employs a dual platinum construction, with a platinum disk and platinum electrode tip. The electrode itself has a width of 11mm which is a little thicker than you will find on truly premium plugs however it’s not going to have a noticeable effect on performance in a normal car in regular driving conditions.
Why are spark plugs side gapped in racing?
Side gapping spark plugs has been use in racing for years to increase horsepower by unshrouding the spark thus allowing the flame created to propagate faster resulting in a more complete burning of the fuel/air mix. Many manufacturers offer plugs deemed racing plugs that are side gapped but at inflated costs.
What do you use to cut spark plugs?
Using a dremel with a cutoff wheel or a hacksaw you will need to cut the ground electrode even with the edge of the center electrode. You need to be careful not to hit the center electrode or the porcelain. Next you will need to use a file to remove any burrs left from cutting the ground electrode.

What does pre ignition mean on a spark plug?
Pre-ignition is where combustion initiates before the spark plug fires as the result of an extremely hot, glowing ignition source in the chamber. Many times this is traced (but not limited) to a long ground strap used on an extended-nose spark plug.
Can a fine wire plug be used as a spark plug?
A wider gap increases the load on the ignition system, demanding higher voltage. Replacing this with a fine-wire plug would allow running a decent plug gap and still offer the potential for improved combustion. The copper core does transfer a significant amount of heat.
