Why is there blow by in the breather tube of a motorcycle?
Blow-by is usually caused by failing piston rings, which are used to separate the engine cylinder’s combustion chamber from the crankcase. During operation, the ignited air and fuel mixture can work past, or blow by, the damaged piston rings, increasing the crankcase pressure beyond normal limits.
What does it mean when your crankcase breather is blowing oil?
If your crankcase breather is passing oil, chances are that something’s wrong (Okay, we know something’s wrong, but don’t be too alarmed). Here are some things to look for while you’re searching for the source of the issue:
What happens if you plug the breather pipe in an engine?
Oil consumption will increase and the engine will respond like it has less power. Failure to repair the plugged breather can lead to fouled spark plugs and possibly a blown head gasket or intake gasket as the built up air attempts to escape the engine. Proper breather maintenance can prevent a major engine catastrophe.
What are the symptoms of a defective crankcase breather?
Decline of Engine Performance. A sluggish engine is another sign that a crankcase breather is not working correctly. A clogged breather can cause vacuum leaks, leading to an incorrect air-fuel ratio. You will notice a decrease in overall power and acceleration, particularly at low engine speeds.

Why does my car not have a breather system?
Carb Icing restricts the flow of air and fuel and causes your engine to cut out just off choke. If you don’t have a correct breather system installed your engine may over-pressurise resulting in oil spray in the engine bay from the bottom pulley and other places you can’t reach. I have come across it on standard 1600 engines too.
What happens when there is no breather system on a twin carb engine?
With no breather system on a twin carb engine your engine has limited pre-heat (recycled warm air from the engine). It will take longer to start up and warm up and may even cut out when the choke comes off. With a single carb you will get some preheat from the preheat pipes but this may not be enough to overcome what is known as ‘Carb Icing’.
