Why is my shifter not working on my Triumph Bonneville?

If this return spring is broken, the detent spins without engaging, and the shifter shaft would not be able to rotate the shifter drum.

Computer reading shows problems with solenoid. I actually have 2-Pontiac Bonneville’s (’02 SSEI & ’03) that are experiencing the same problem.
