Why does my rear hatch lock on my Subaru Forester?
Some older Foresters (mine) won’t open unless you have pressed the handle really, really hard when closing the latch. Do it right and you hear a good, solid clunk when unlocking. Do it wrong and you hear a feeble attempt.
How do I open the rear door on a Subaru Forester?
Give it a try. Open driver door. Press and release door power lock button on the door panel. Press and hold both Lock and Rear Gate buttons on the key fob for 7 seconds. Hear short beep to indicate fob is re-enabled. oh my goodness! This is happening to me right now!
Is the unlock button on a Subaru Forester working?
It doesn’t work either. Seems unlikely that both key fobs would simultaneously fail and/or drain their batteries. Fortunately, I had programmed an unlock PIN code, and was able to unlock the driver door using the hidden lock button on the hatch. This demonstrates that the unlocking functionality is working OK (relays, lock solenoids, wiring).

Why does my rear hatch not lock or unlock?
Unfortunately there is no change, it still doesn’t open or lock/unlock. I can tell there is some electrical signal being passed since the car knows when the latch has been manually moved into lock or unlock states (5 beeps when using power locks to indicate unlocked, single beep after manually moving lock). Any suggested next steps?
What do you do when the hatch won’t open?
Turn the lever to the right position using a flat-head screwdriver or a similar tool. Then the rear gate will open. Way too complicated. Push the rear cover back and make sure the pull is out of the way. Laughing at Oneself and with Other is good for the Soul?

The primary method of opening the hatch is an electronic button on the hatch. The only way I can open and close it now is by crawling through the car and using the small finger hole manual release.
