Why does my AC compressor clutch engage and disengage?
The clutch only engages if 1) there is sufficient pressure in the system to close the low pressure switch 2) not enough pressure to open the high pressure switch. This means it will engage and disengage if the pressure in the system is low and re-engages as the pressure between the high and low sides equalize.
Why does my AC clutch stay engaged?
The low-pressure switch tells the car that the clutch needs to engage and disengage and will shut off the A/C compressor. When the switch goes bad, it will no longer be able to measure pressure and will leave the clutch engaged the entire time.
What causes AC compressor to short cycle?
As we said above, short-cycling is often the symptom of a problem—this problem could be from any of the following circumstances: A clogged air filter. An oversized or undersized air conditioner. Low refrigerant charge due to leaks.
Should AC clutch turn on and off?
No. If the refrigerant is low the compressor will cycle more often. It is designed to cycle so this will likely not cause damage to the compressor. It will put more wear on the clutch mechanism.
What causes AC clutch not to disengage?
Re: AC clutch not disengaging If yours is running all the time it only really means one thing: the system is not reaching high enough pressure to shut off. This can mean a bad compressor, or a compressor falling out of spec. It is not always the cause though.
Is it normal for car AC compressor to cycle on and off?
Since the mid-1990s, most cars equipped with air conditioning have also been outfitted with electronic modules that tell your car’s AC compressor to cycle on and off. Although it may be alarming the first time it happens at a stoplight or when you are idling at the store, it is very normal.
Why does my air conditioner cut on and off frequently?
Your air conditioner may be short cycling because it is repeatedly starting up then overheating (and shutting down) due to a bad compressor, dirty filters, dirty coils, low refrigerant, or frozen coils. An overcharged system will cause liquid Freon to get into your compressor and cause it to malfunction.
When does the a / C CLUTCH turn on and off?
After a while it starts to engage for few seconds and than back off for about 10-15. While A/C clutch is engaged, pressure gauge shows it to be on bottom side of green. I have followed direction on bottle of A/C Pro to fill my unit. But it have not made any difference.

Why does my air conditioner compressor keep kicking on and off?
As expected – the high pressure was too high. Some of the freon was taken out of the vehicle and the guy said there most likely was some air in the line that wasn’t helping things. After taking some out, the compressor stopped kicking on and off – and the high pressure then stayed fairly stable between 325 and 350 psi. Test drive time!
What’s the high pressure air conditioner compressor pressure?
After taking some out, the compressor stopped kicking on and off – and the high pressure then stayed fairly stable between 325 and 350 psi. Test drive time! Didn’t even make it very far and the compressor started kicking on and off again! So, back to the hoses.
