Where is the starter relay on a 1986 Softail?
Hello, all! Can someone please tell me where my bike’s starter relay is located? Some have said it’s back by the battery compartment, others have said it’s between the fuel tanks the only stuff I saw between the fuel tanks were mainly a bunch of wires…..my bike is a 1986 Heritage Softail (1340cc Evo).
What happens when the starter fails on a Harley Davidson?
The magnet pulls a contact into the closed position and high current is available to the starter. Release the ignition switch to de-energize the electromagnet and stop current flow to the starter. * Failure of the energizing circuit. The relay is effectively “dead” when this circuit fails. Attempting to start the engine will be unsuccessful.
Can a starter relay be replaced on a motorcycle?
Replacement of a starter relay is not a difficult task for someone with basic mechanical skills. Safety first: always disconnect the battery cable before touching the relay. Tools or wet fingers that happen to touch both sides of the contact circuit may cause sparking and could turn over the engine, creating a very dangerous situation.
What is a solenoid in a starter relay?
The starter relay, usually called a solenoid in automotive applications, is simply an electronic switch. Relays can be electro-mechanical or solid-state. The theory of operation is the same for both. Two circuits are necessary for the relay to operate.

What are the symptoms of a Harley Davidson starter problem?
Harley Davidson Electra-Glide 1985 FLHT start clutch drive problem. Symptoms: When starter button is pressed there is a click and nothing happens or the starter drive tries to engage and then does not stay engaged. There is a lot of racket and noise like gears grinding.
Why is my starter not engaging the flywheel?
Tighten the mounting bolts and other connecting wires. If the mounting bolt is loose, the starter drive will not engage the flywheel properly. It will make a grinding noise when you try to fire up your engine. What this means is that the pinion gear on the starter is clashing with the ring gear on the flywheel. Check the pinion gear.
What happens when the starter relay is on?
When the starter relay is on, the starter rotor will start to move firing up the engine. The first thing you must check is if your battery has enough voltage to power up your car’s engine.

What’s the voltage on a Harley Davidson starter?
I check the voltage at the kill switch and get 12.3 from the black and white wire that goes to the kill switch and the start button. But, I only get 9.2 volts from the black and red wire from the start switch to the start relay. All the fuses are good and there are 12 volts to the starter and the solenoid.
Why is my Harley Davidson Ultra Classic not starting?
I have a 2010 ultra classic with ABS. It is not starting. The battery voltage is 12.75 off the battery. When I turn the main switch on, I get a drop to 12.5, and when the kill switch is turned on, I get a drop to 12.38. The self test goes out and hit the start switch with nothing – no volt drop, no starter engage, no nothing. DEAD.
