Most of the population of Long Island was closer to the shores than the LIRR’s central alignment; only limited success was had in inducing settlers on the central Long Island scrub oak and pine barrens. An amendment to the LIRR’s charter passed April 21, 1862 allowed it to build branches anywhere east of Jamaica.
