Plastic control arm on damper needs to be replaced. Common problem. My 2012 Grand Cherokee did the same thing. Passenger side blend door gear broke; it’s cheap plastic gear. $2 part. Can be done yourself, there’s a how to somewhere on this forum.

That gear needs to rotate counter clockwise about a quarter turn to open the blend door. But you can’t rotate the gear that far without it hitting the top housing. Also that would not mesh correctly then with the bottom gear.

It’s a fairly simple fix. Remove the glove box and the passenger side blend door actuator motor and gear is just inside to the left. Shouldn’t cost more than $150-$200 to replace with parts and labor included by a good cheap independent tech. There’s several good posts in these forums explaining exactly how to do it.

You are not accessing the blend doors inside the air box. You are replacing the actuator motor and gear mounted to the outside of the air box with two T20 screws. If you do not want to tackle it yourself… find a cheap mechanic on Craigslist for $25 to $30 an hour labor.
