What is VVT cam gear?
More & more vehicles are equipped with VVT cam gear to improve fuel economy performance. The electronic technology allows right amount of oil supply to get into engine via variable valve timing solenoid adjustment. Automakers have their own names to this technology. Ford calls it Variable Camshaft Timing, VCT.
What is VVTi and how does it work?
In internal combustion engines, variable valve timing (VVT) is the process of altering the timing of a valve lift event, and is often used to improve performance, fuel economy or emissions. Two-stroke engines use a power valve system to get similar results to VVT.
What is better VVTi or VTEC?
And a Honda engineer came up with a solution or as we all know it better ‘i-VTEC’. It is Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control with intelligence. The VVTi only alters the timing while i-VTEC alters the timing as well as lift of the valves. Also, the VVTi technology works only on the intake valve.
Is the intake cam timing adjustable with variable cams?
With the variable cam timing Im not sure how adjustable the intake cam will be before I see a drop in power, but I suspect I can play with a couple of degrees and make a small gain on the intake. I think the biggest gain will be in the exhaust. Its hard to tell with stock cams and the VCT, but Id like to try and see what happens.
Can you adjust intake timing on a dual VVT engine?
This however does add extra complexity, particularly when we have the ability to adjust both the intake and exhaust cam timing together. In this webinar we will discuss the effect of cam timing on the engine and look at a strategy for optimising cam timing on dual VVT engines.
How is the camshaft different from the intake and exhaust valves?
Because the camshaft is further away from the intake and exhaust valves a different configuration of the rocker arm and lifter is used. The lifter now rides along the camshaft with the camshaft lobe cut at a slight angle at the top of the lobe which spins the lifter slightly to help cut down on wear.
How does the variable valve timing system work?
The (VVT) variable valve timing system, uses engine oil pressure, to change the position of the intake camshaft. As a result, optimizing intake valve timing for operating conditions. Note: Only the intake is involved.
