What is Protexin Denamarin?
Protexin Denamarin is a dietary supplement containing a stabilised form of the SS-SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) isomer and silybin complexed with phosphatidylcholine for cats and dogs. It is available in packs of 30 tablets – 90mg (cats and small dogs), 225mg (medium dogs) and 425mg (large dogs).
When should a dog take Denamarin?
For optimal absorption, tablets should be given on an empty stomach, at least one hour before feeding, as the presence of food decreases the absorption of S-Adenosylmethionine. For those owners who have difficulty administering tablets to their pets, Denamarin tablet(s) may be disguised in a small bite of food.
Can my dog take Denamarin long term?
It is certainly safe to use long term and even as a preventative in those pets who are also taking medications that may be toxic to the liver such as prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as Rimadyl, Deramaxx, Previcox or Metacam.
Are dogs in pain when they have liver failure?
In some instances this is not possible and therapy is focused on supporting the liver in its remaining function. Liver disease is a non-painful condition, however dogs and cats can be nauseous, neurological or accumulate fluid in the abdomen, all of which require medication to control.

Which is more bioavailable, silymarin or denamarin?
Silybin complexed with phosphatidylcholine, which has been shown to be more bioavailable than silymarin alone. The enteric coating of Denamarin protects the SAMe from degradation.
How is denamarin blister packed to prevent oxidation?
Denamarin is also blister packed to prevent oxidation of the SAMe to the non-biologically active R,S-SAMe isomer. Where possible we recommend an overnight fast to ensure the stomach is empty before administering the tablet, thereby allowing the best absorption of the active ingredients.
